Sarasota Monthly Meeting Friends were pleased to host a meeting of Friends World Committee for Consultation’s (FWCC) Section of the Americas Nominating Committee over the weekend of November 6 – 8. This committee is responsible for identifying representatives from yearly meetings to serve on the 7 committees of the Section of the Americas. Guided by the light, they seek to ascertain representation from Friends from various traditions and regions whose calling and gifts strengthen the work of the Section.
Nancy Corindia, Sarasota Meeting Clerk, writes:
“My response to this experience was awe by the work of a nominating committee at this level/scale. This pales Monthly Meeting and Yearly Meeting’s nominating committee jobs–and those are huge jobs. This group knows Friends from all the Yearly Meetings in the US that participate in FWCC, and Mexican, Cuban, and South American Friends. Sarah was talking to a Friend in Cuba using Skype! Every empty space in the Meeting House had a nominating committee member using cell phones calling all over the Americas.”
Committee members who were able to attend the gathering included: Anna Baker, Brenda Cox, Ray Treadway, David Shiner, and Sarah Hernandez, who is a member of Sarasota Meeting. Karen Gregorio from the FWCC Executive Committee and staff members Robin Mohr and Hye Sung were also present to support the efforts of the committee.
The group gathered Friday night for dinner and to begin their work, and were able to complete their anticipated tasks between 9am and 5pm on Saturday. Some guests were able to join Sarasota Monthly Meeting during Sunday worship. Sarasota Friends hosted guests in their homes and enjoyed social time during dinner Friday, lunch and dinner on Saturday, and potluck lunch on Sunday.
“When SMM has guests like a speaker, Fall Interim Business Meeting, etc., the potluck luncheon clicks up a level. For these way out-of-town quests Friends pulled out all the stops! What a meal!!”
