Miami Friends Minute Support for Standing Rock Sioux

miamilogoMiami Friends Meeting, at their Meeting for Business on September 18, approved this minute of support for the Standing Rock Sioux in their actions to block the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL):

“The Dakota Access pipeline, which is being built by the Dallas-based company Energy Transfer Partners, endangers culturally significant land and also puts the Missouri River in danger of pollution. We, the Miami Friends Meeting (SEYM), are called to support the voices and actions of the Standing Rock Sioux and the more than 150 Tribal Nations at Sacred Stones Camp in North Dakota and others who have joined them in peaceful protest and protection of the water of the Missouri River. We also stand in solidarity with New York Yearly Meeting, Dallas Friends Meeting, Quaker Earthcare Witness and others who oppose the pipeline project and the violence toward peaceful protestors by security forces.

The minute was sent to Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL), who forwarded it to Creation Justice Ministries, where it is posted on their webpage of Christian Communities Support Standing Rock Sioux Protection of Land and Water from Dakota Access Pipeline. FCNL, EQAT, New York Yearly Meeting, and Dallas Friends Meeting are also on this list of supporters.

Jose Arguto, FCNL Legislative Secretary, Sustainable Energy and Environment, has written an article, Standing with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, explaining the issues involved and where things stand now. He writes:

“FCNL is collaborating with our faith partners and NCAI on steps we can take together and with you, to influence other relevant policy-makers on the national level after the judge’s ruling planned on or before September 9th. Please stay tuned.”
