SUMMARY:Seekers Book Club Resumes October 2nd
DESCRIPTION:About the book\, John Calvi writes\, \nI’ve been watching the people in the places I work. I watch very carefully to see something in particular. Who is serving long term in a crisis situation and not becoming a victim of burnout? How is it that one can witness ongoing pain and suffering and continue to offer their best? How does that work? The core of this book is about goodness and knowing your goodness. I am suggesting that knowing your goodness offers strength and balance for hard work\, specifically the hard work of healing one’s self and others. \nHow Far Have You Traveled is available in print through Quaker Books\, and in paperback (new and used) and Kindle from Amazon. \nIf are interested in joining us email Cheryl Demers-Holton at cheryldemersrn@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Bubbling Springs: The Life & Writings of Margaret Fell
DESCRIPTION:Margaret Fell was an amazing person. From the day she met George Fox (whom she married after the death of her first husband)\, she threw herself wholeheartedly into the young Quaker movement\, while at the same time raising eight children and fulfilling her domestic duties as the wife of the lord of a Manor. The first public Quaker meeting was held at her home\, Swarthmoor Hall\, just a few weeks after she met Fox; and Meetings continued to be held there for almost 40 years. This was despite her being imprisoned for holding them! \nMargaret wrote sixteen books and many tracts and letters. Friends wrote to her from all over the world to share their suffering and ask for her help and support. This workshop series will focus on her inspirational writing\, which is surprisingly relevant to the times we live in. \nEach session will include stories about Margaret\, readings of one or two of her letters and epistles\, and time in small and large groups to consider her words. The language has been modernized and references to people in general and to God have been altered to be gender neutral. \nWorkshops will be on Zoom\, Saturdays: 8/9\, 8/23\, 9/6\, 9/20 from 10:00am to 12:00noon \nShulamith Clearbridge is a member of Swarthmore Monthly Meeting. She has taught workshops and classes all her life — for organizations\, institutions\, and continuing education programs. Shulamith has led workshops and retreats\, Quaker Meetings for Healing\, and adult religious education programs for monthly and quarterly Meetings in Vermont\, the Chicago area\, the Philadelphia area\, and elsewhere; as well as for New England Yearly Meeting\, Philadelphia Yearly Meeting\, Friends General Conference. Shulamith has also led workshops for Quaker retreat and conference centers\, such as Pendle Hill. In addition\, she has led programs on spirituality and Quakerism for church and interfaith groups. \nIn addition to teaching\, Shulamith is a writer and an interfaith spiritual director. She has a Masters of Divinity — her 1995 book\, Finding God: Prayers & Spiritual Practices from Many Traditions\, was her thesis. She is the author of the Pendle Hill Pamphlet\, Plain Talk about Dying: the Spiritual Effects of Taking My Father Off Life Support\, and Good Night: Interfaith Prayers & Meditations Before Sleep\, in press with Barclay Press.

SUMMARY:Seeker's Book Club Resumes Mar 6th
DESCRIPTION:We will be starting a new book\, Almost Everything: Notes on Hope by Anne Lamott. In this candid\, insightful and sometimes hilarious book\, Lamott calls for each of us to rediscover the nuggets of hope and wisdom that are buried within us that can make life sweeter than we ever imagined. Divided into short chapters that explore life’s essential truths\, Almost Everything pinpoints these moments of insight as it shines an encouraging light forward. \nThis book is 208 pages and we will discuss it one or two pages at a time. This means reading 20 – 30 pages in two weeks and using those pages as a jumping of point for discussion. Please join us as we share our “nuggets of hope and wisdom” — there will be laughter! \nIf you are interested in joining us\, please RSVP to Cheryl Demers-Holton.

SUMMARY:Called Yearly Business Meeting on August 31st
DESCRIPTION:At our Summer Executive Committee\, Friends minuted the decision to take up Deland’s request at a called Yearly Business Meeting\, rather than waiting until next Yearly Meeting annual sessions (April 2025). Deland Friends have a pressing need to be able to handle their own finances to support their very active witness in the wider community and further their outreach; and they also are at the point where they need to be able to hold and encourage membership. Deland Worship Group has been in existence for many years\, and under the care of Orlando Meeting. \nAll Friends\, Meetings\, and Worship Groups are asked to read the Documents In Advance and consider Deland’s request at their meetings for business. The August 31 date was chosen in order to allow for two monthly meetings for business to discern this issue prior to the Called Yearly Business Meeting. \nSee the Documents In Advance \nVisit Deland Worship Group’s website \nSt. Petersburg Meeting minute on Deland Worship Group’s request \nRegistration is required.

SUMMARY:Wading in the Water: Listening\, Opening\, & Walking Faithfully
DESCRIPTION:Each session stands on its own; just choose the ones you wish to attend when you register. Participants will be enriched by attending all three sessions. \nSession 1: May 11th 2024 – 1-3 pm\nListening Deeply to Spirit\, to Each Other\, and to Our Souls\nIn a world filled with noise\, listening to the still\, small voice is needed and a challenge. Our faith is based on listening to Spirit’s movements in ourselves and in our community. In this session we will explore listening\, speaking with our authentic voice\, and hearing where the words come from. In community\, how we Listen to one another and the Spirit matters. We will share experiences of being listened to and deepen our practice of listening to Spirit as an act of faithfulness. \n\nSession 2: June 15th 2024 – 1-3 pm\nOpening our Hearts to Continuing Revelation\nListening to Spirit invites us to open our hearts as we live into faithfulness in changing times. We will practice opening our hearts with one another\, sharing what is important to hold onto or let go of as we listen to Spirit. We will explore how opening our hearts allows continuing revelation\, a core experience of our faith\, to reveal new paths and transform community. \n\nSession 3: July 20th 2024 – 1-3 pm\nWalking Forward in Faith\nWhen it feels like the sands are shifting under our feet\, how do we move forward? What sustains us through spiritually challenging times? What gives us hope? We will explore how care of community supports individual and collective faithfulness\, knowing that “the power of love will carry us through all.”How is Spirit calling us?” \n  \nAnne Pomeroy is a Quaker spiritual director and a member of New Paltz Monthly Meeting in New York Yearly Meeting. They have traveled widely among Friends\, serving both as elder and as a workshop leader. They are a member of both FGC’s Executive Committee and Development Committee. In this role\, Anne has frequently been invited to run workshops that strengthen spiritual friendships and elder relationships. Their ministry is grounded in a listening heart that seeks to discover what is most needed in those with whom they journey. SEYM is most blessed to have this opportunity for Anne to wade with us in the waters of our spiritual life. \n [dssb_sharing_buttons icon_placement=”icon” btn_spacing_bottom=”0px” use_global_sharing=”on” _builder_version=”4.25.2″ _module_preset=”default” width=”34.8%” module_alignment=”left” custom_margin=”-8px||||false|false” hover_enabled=”0″ locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content” sticky_enabled=”0″][dssb_sharing_button sharing_message=”custom_message” network_custom_message=”@ET-DC@eyJkeW5hbWljIjp0cnVlLCJjb250ZW50IjoicG9zdF9leGNlcnB0Iiwic2V0dGluZ3MiOnsiYmVmb3JlIjoiIiwiYWZ0ZXIiOiIiLCJ3b3JkcyI6IiIsInJlYWRfbW9yZV9sYWJlbCI6IiJ9fQ==@” _builder_version=”4.25.2″ _dynamic_attributes=”network_custom_message” _module_preset=”default” background_color=”#0C71C3″ background_enable_color=”on” width=”62%” max_width=”63%” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][/dssb_sharing_button][dssb_sharing_button social_network=”email” _builder_version=”4.25.2″ _module_preset=”default” background_color=”#0C71C3″ background_enable_color=”on” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][/dssb_sharing_button][dssb_sharing_button social_network=”print” _builder_version=”4.25.2″ _module_preset=”default” background_color=”#0C71C3″ background_enable_color=”on” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][/dssb_sharing_button][/dssb_sharing_buttons][dssb_sharing_buttons _builder_version=”4.25.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][/dssb_sharing_buttons]

SUMMARY:Seekers Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Our next book will be – Abuelita Faith: What Women on the Margins Teach Us About Wisdom\, Persistence\, and Strength by Kat Armas\, a second-generation Cuban American who grew up on the outskirts of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood. Combining personal storytelling with biblical reflection\, Armas shows us how voices on the margins – those often dismissed\, isolated\, and oppressed because of their gender\, socioeconomic status\, or lack of education — have more to teach us about following God than we realize. She tells the stories of unnamed and overlooked theologians in society and in the Bible — mothers\, grandmothers\, sisters\, and daughters — whose survival\, strength\, resistance\, and persistence teach us the true power of faith and love. \nWe will read a chapter at a time (about 15 pages) and spend each meeting discussing what thoughts\, feelings or learning came out of the reading. \nWhether you are new to Quakerism\, or a well seasoned Friend\, or perhaps simply Quaker curious\, all are welcome to attend. Please email Cheryl Demers-Holton if you are interested in joining\, or \nSee the flyer with our Zoom login>

SUMMARY:Growing Faith in Spirit Led Action
DESCRIPTION:Tim Gee heads the World Office of Friends World Committee for Consultation (FWCC) in London. He serves on oversight committees for both the Geneva and the New York Quaker United Nations Offices (QUNO)\, representing Quakers in gatherings of international faith communities. Tim also collaborates with the four FWCC sections: The Section of the Americas\, the Europe and Middle East Section\, the Africa Section and the Asia West Pacific Section. \nIn the past\, Tim has worked for Friends of the Earth\, Christian Aid\, Quaker Peace & Social Witness\, and Amnesty International. He is a prolific writer of books and articles published in The Guardian\, New Internationalist and the Independent. For a collection of his writings\, go to The Australian Friend: Tim Gee\, Author. We recommend his article\, Some fruits of spiritual preparation\, dated March 6\, 2022. \nPlease visit the Friends World Committee for Consultation website to acquaint yourself with their work\, and make note of the scope of work that Tim has been engaged with since January 2022.  \nSEYM Friend Eduardo Diaz became acquainted with Tim when serving on a selection committee for the General Secretary position. He found an earnest and amicable Friend that was already knowledgeable of the depth and breadth of diverse Quaker histories\, and who was willing to listen\, in the Spirit\, to Quakers from different world geographic and cultural regions. \nThis virtual encounter is designed to give Tim an opportunity to share part of his Spiritual Journey followed by a brief question and answer period. \n

SUMMARY:Stories from the Book of Acts
DESCRIPTION:In the Bible\, the book of Acts is the story of what happened after Jesus’ death and resurrection\, covering approximately the first thirty years of establishing what would become the Christian church. The community described in these stories is deeply flawed and beautifully human\, and for that reason\, there are many resonances with our own experiences in faith communities. \nThe group gathered will choose which topics to explore within our limited time. \n \nEmily Provance is a Quaker traveling minister from Fifteenth Street Meeting in New York City. She’s also an associate of Good News Associates\, a Christian\, nonprofit\, ministry organization supporting individuals who are called to non-institutional ministries. \nAmong Quakers\, she initiates and coordinates projects that vary greatly in topic but are unified by approach. She helps people who are very different work together on things they all care about. She has a deep faith in the power of relationships as the most reliable pathway to peace and to change. \nEmily was our 2021 Walton Lecture Speaker. She also has a blog for her ministry\, Turning\, Turning: Holy Experiments Among Friends.

SUMMARY:Child Safety Training
DESCRIPTION:All Friends are welcome to take the training\, whether you work with children or not. Our communities are better equipped to truly welcome families when more Friends know how to create a safe space for youth. \nDo you want to work with youth in SEYM? The training is a component of the SEYM Child Abuse Prevention Program (CAPP). Friends who work with youth at our yearly meeting events are required to be CAPP registered\, which involves taking the training and passing background and reference checks. Learn more on our Child Safety page. \nMeetings and Worship Groups are invited to take the SEYM Child Safety Training online as a group. If you would like to arrange a training as a Monthly Meeting or Worship Group\, please contact Cheryl Demers-Holton\, CAPP Coordinator.

SUMMARY:"Dare Not Walk Alone" film showing
DESCRIPTION:St. Augustine Quakers have partnered with The United Church (the church that hosts our worship group) to screen Dare Not Walk Alone. This is the first in a series of events celebrating the 60th anniversary of the passage of the Civil Rights Act in 1964. Why? Because St. Augustine played a significant role in that passage. The nonviolent protests against segregation and racial discrimination that St. Augustine residents mounted attracted the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, and Andrew Young to St. Augustine\, and the violent response of other St. Augustine residents made the news internationally. To avoid further negative publicity\, President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act into law on July 2\, 1964. \nSee the attached flyer giving the details of the event\, and please spread the word. Tell your friends\, post the flyer on social media\, etc. \nRichelle Ogle writes: \n\nI really hope some of you hop in your cars and come to St. Augustine for this. I would love to see you here — and at future events remembering\, reflecting on\, and honoring this important event in our nation’s history. \n\nTo prepare both for the showing on January 27 of Dare Not Walk Alone\, and for the celebration of Martin Luther King’s birthday this coming weekend\, Friends are encouraged to watch Passage to St. Augustine\, an hour-long documentary is about the bloodiest campaign of the entire Movement that led directly to the passage of the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964.
