Participants will be enriched by attending all three sessions. \nSession 1: May 11th 2024 – 1-3 pm\nListening Deeply to Spirit\, to Each Other\, and to Our Souls\nIn a world filled with noise\, listening to the still\, small voice is needed and a challenge. Our faith is based on listening to Spirit’s movements in ourselves and in our community. In this session we will explore listening\, speaking with our authentic voice\, and hearing where the words come from. In community\, how we Listen to one another and the Spirit matters. We will share experiences of being listened to and deepen our practice of listening to Spirit as an act of faithfulness. \n\nSession 2: June 15th 2024 – 1-3 pm\nOpening our Hearts to Continuing Revelation\nListening to Spirit invites us to open our hearts as we live into faithfulness in changing times. We will practice opening our hearts with one another\, sharing what is important to hold onto or let go of as we listen to Spirit. We will explore how opening our hearts allows continuing revelation\, a core experience of our faith\, to reveal new paths and transform community. \n\nSession 3: July 20th 2024 – 1-3 pm\nWalking Forward in Faith\nWhen it feels like the sands are shifting under our feet\, how do we move forward? What sustains us through spiritually challenging times? What gives us hope? We will explore how care of community supports individual and collective faithfulness\, knowing that “the power of love will carry us through all.”How is Spirit calling us?” \n  \nAnne Pomeroy is a Quaker spiritual director and a member of New Paltz Monthly Meeting in New York Yearly Meeting. DESCRIPTION:Our next book will be – Abuelita Faith: What Women on the Margins Teach Us About Wisdom\, Persistence\, and Strength by Kat Armas\, a second-generation Cuban American who grew up on the outskirts of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood. Combining personal storytelling with biblical reﬂection\, Armas shows us how voices on the margins – those often dismissed\, isolated\, and oppressed because of their gender\, socioeconomic status\, or lack of education — have more to teach us about following God than we realize. She tells the stories of unnamed and overlooked theologians in society and in the Bible — mothers\, grandmothers\, sisters\, and daughters — whose survival\, strength\, resistance\, and persistence teach us the true power of faith and love. \nWe will read a chapter at a time (about 15 pages) and spend each meeting discussing what thoughts\, feelings or learning came out of the reading. \nWhether you are new to Quakerism\, or a well seasoned Friend\, or perhaps simply Quaker curious\, all are welcome to attend. DESCRIPTION:Tim Gee heads the World Office of Friends World Committee for Consultation (FWCC) in London. He serves on oversight committees for both the Geneva and the New York Quaker United Nations Offices (QUNO)\, representing Quakers in gatherings of international faith communities. Tim also collaborates with the four FWCC sections: The Section of the Americas\, the Europe and Middle East Section\, the Africa Section and the Asia West Pacific Section. \nIn the past\, Tim has worked for Friends of the Earth\, Christian Aid\, Quaker Peace & Social Witness\, and Amnesty International. He is a prolific writer of books and articles published in The Guardian\, New Internationalist and the Independent. For a collection of his writings\, go to The Australian Friend: Tim Gee\, Author. We recommend his article\, Some fruits of spiritual preparation\, dated March 6\, 2022. \nPlease visit the Friends World Committee for Consultation website to acquaint yourself with their work\, and make note of the scope of work that Tim has been engaged with since January 2022.  \nSEYM Friend Eduardo Diaz became acquainted with Tim when serving on a selection committee for the General Secretary position. DESCRIPTION:In the Bible\, the book of Acts is the story of what happened after Jesus’ death and resurrection\, covering approximately the first thirty years of establishing what would become the Christian church. The community described in these stories is deeply flawed and beautifully human\, and for that reason\, there are many resonances with our own experiences in faith communities. \nThe group gathered will choose which topics to explore within our limited time. \n \nEmily Provance is a Quaker traveling minister from Fifteenth Street Meeting in New York City. She’s also an associate of Good News Associates\, a Christian\, nonprofit\, ministry organization supporting individuals who are called to non-institutional ministries. \nAmong Quakers\, she initiates and coordinates projects that vary greatly in topic but are unified by approach. She helps people who are very different work together on things they all care about. She has a deep faith in the power of relationships as the most reliable pathway to peace and to change. \nEmily was our 2021 Walton Lecture Speaker. She also has a blog for her ministry\, Turning\, Turning: Holy Experiments Among Friends.

DESCRIPTION:St. Augustine Quakers have partnered with The United Church (the church that hosts our worship group) to screen Dare Not Walk Alone. This is the first in a series of events celebrating the 60th anniversary of the passage of the Civil Rights Act in 1964. Why? Because St. Augustine played a significant role in that passage. The nonviolent protests against segregation and racial discrimination that St. Augustine residents mounted attracted the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, and Andrew Young to St. Augustine\, and the violent response of other St. Augustine residents made the news internationally. To avoid further negative publicity\, President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act into law on July 2\, 1964. \nSee the attached flyer giving the details of the event\, and please spread the word. Tell your friends\, post the flyer on social media\, etc. \nRichelle Ogle writes: \n\nI really hope some of you hop in your cars and come to St. Augustine for this. I would love to see you here — and at future events remembering\, reflecting on\, and honoring this important event in our nation’s history. \n\nTo prepare both for the showing on January 27 of Dare Not Walk Alone\, and for the celebration of Martin Luther King’s birthday this coming weekend\, Friends are encouraged to watch Passage to St. Augustine\, an hour-long documentary is about the bloodiest campaign of the entire Movement that led directly to the passage of the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964.
